Learn how to make artist-grade watercolor paints from rocks and minerals that can be foraged from the natural environment. Foraging rocks and making paint connects you to the materials, land, and your creative process in a deeper way. Natural pigments have more depth and texture than commercial paints. Every rock is unique and provides a vast spectrum of color and personality to explore.
In this workshop, we will learn what kinds of rocks and minerals can be used for paint, how to spot them in the wild, how to process them into pigment (powdered material), and how to turn that into watercolor paint. You will learn a recipe for watercolor paint binder, see a demonstration, and make several of your own paints from rocks and minerals collected around Washington (provided by Julie). This workshop is open to all levels and is for anyone with an interest in the natural world or artists and painters who want to explore new mediums and learn how to incorporate natural materials into their practice. You will take home several paint samples the paint that you make in the workshop to use for future painting.
